Painted Trillium

I love Muskoka, but my love is severely tested every May.

In May, in Muskoka, one must face the following:

… blackflies …
… mosquitos …
… blackflies …
… blackflies …
… also, blackflies …

However, if one is prepared to face the blackflies (armed with insect repellant, a bug-proof shirt, and a willingness to run away from time to time) one can see some of the loveliest flowers of spring.

There are three kinds of Trilliums growing at my parents’ cottage: White, Red, and Painted. Of the three, Painted Trilliums are my favourite. They’re smaller than the White, with narrower petals, and magnificent streaks of magenta at their hearts.

I got bitten three times while taking this picture.

It was worth it.
