Feathered Traffic Jam

The Don Valley Brickworks has a house for Purple Martins. I’ve seen Purple Martin houses all over Ontario, but none of them have ever had Purple Martins in them. This one does.

Purple Martins are a kind of Swallow and look very similar to other Swallows, except that they are larger and do not have white underparts – they are very dark purple all over. Their call is a fascinating series of chirps, twitters, and click noises.

At this Martin house, there was a little squabble when two male Martins arrived at the same perch at the same time. The whole thing was watched by a juvenile, who was clearly hoping to be fed (you can just see him behind the flurry of purple feathers).
