Winter: Black & White

Winter is great time for black and white photography.

On days when the sun is shining and the shadows are very dark, taking a photo in black and white lets you see the striking contrasts without the distraction of colours which may be distorted or flattened by the bright light.

On days when the clouds are heavy, colours may appear washed out and dull, and shooting in black and white lets you draw out the delicate gradations of shadow.

The cold weather also seems very appropriate to the uncompromising, stripped-down nature of monochrome images.

There are twelve photos in this gallery. Click on any picture to launch.
