Ice on the River

Winter has been dragging on a bit, here in Canada. For the most part I like winter, but at a certain point (somewhere around the beginning of March) I like to see signs of spring. We’re having a few days of warm weather at the moment – by which I mean that the temperature is a couple of degrees above freezing – but there will probably be another cold snap before long. People in the UK and Europe are starting to post pictures of snowdrops and crocuses. Over here we’re still waiting to see dirt, never mind green things.

This photo was taken just last week, on the Don River. I had to follow a side-trail under a railway bridge to see it. I’ve never seen this particular phenomenon on this particular river before. In Toronto we don’t usually get ice thick enough to turn blue.
